Class Description

Ballet is a classical dance form demanding grace, elegance and precision. In ballet class, students will learn how to perform formalized steps, poses, gestures, technical names with definitions, and the skills to execute each term presented. Ballet sets beautiful, intricate, flowing patterns to create storytelling expression through movement. Ballet is the fundamental building block of dance! It gives students an appreciation of music and dance while developing coordination, strength and flexibility. Ballet instills a certain amount of discipline, hard work, respect for self/others, and uses art and skill that is ballet. *New students are recommended to start with a ballet class! Ballet is required when taking jazz/contemporary/modern classes.

Tap is a classic style of dance used with special shoes with connected metal plates on the toes/heels to provide beating sounds on the floor. Tap works with isolations of the feet and ankles while training the ear for musicality through beats and rifts. This class builds musicality, endurance, strength in the legs and torso, and most of all attention and precision to detail with sounds and body rhythm. It also incorporates arm movements and character through faces and storytelling. Just like music, tap dancing has many unique styles and types. The different styles of tap dancing came from several backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. People from across the globe have all contributed to tap. There are many different types of tap dancing such as Buck and Wing, Broadway, Jazz Tap, Hoofing, Soft Shoe, Freestyle, and Rhythm Tap. Many tap companies have been formed especially since the 1970's that have kept tap alive. Because of those researching tap and it’s history, it has been emerging stronger than ever. Because of its unique complexity, learning tap defines discipline and patience. The student learns delayed gratification while they develop their technique and musicality. It teaches the power of practice, process, and persistence that they can also attribute to daily life lessons. *Ballet is highly recommended

Acrobatic dance is a dance style that combines both acro and dance skills together in one seamless dance style. It helps students take their dancing to the next level by learning better flexibility, strength, body awareness and skill sets. Acro dance is a high energy, progression based class that moves students to work safely through each skill and level to accomplish their goals. Acro dance is NOT like cheerleading or gymnastics. Please see this diagram for how they are different. *Acro Class is the base class for technique/skills/strength and is the non-performance class. AcroDance is the performance class where the student learns to incorporate their skill sets to dance choreography. Students must take the acro class in order to take acro dance.

Hip Hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Class will include floor work, body isolations, arm and leg precision, partner work, and lots of high energy choreography.

Jazz is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. This type of dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps, body isolations, arm movements and quick turns. In a jazz class, dancers are encouraged to add their own personality to make each step unique and fun as well as implement vintage classical technique. *Required to take ballet

Pointe is an extension and the next step in a ballet dancer’s life. Hard toe paper-mache shoes are made for dancers to wear so they can rise fully up on the tip of their toes or “en pointe”. Dancing en pointe lends lightness and airiness to the dancer’s movements, and the pointed toe extends the line of the leg. This makes their ballet training more intense, challenging and graceful. Gaining control, strength, and alignment is needed to make a successful transition into pointe. Pointe work requires tremendous strength of the legs, ankles and feet to rise up and execute full ballet poses, turns, leaps, and gestures while on the top of the toes and also seamlessly transitioning to flat foot ballet work as well. *Students placed in Pointe must be examined by the ballet director before enrolling.

Modern dance is a technical and emotional dance style in which students let the music inspire and move their body while telling stories through the art of dance. This style contains aspects of lyrical & contemporary choreography with controlled but powerful leaps, turns, body positions, isolations, and extensions of movements while utilizing jazz and ballet technique. *Required to take Ballet

Contemporary/Lyrical dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music. *Required to take Ballet

Mixed Genre Ballroom combines both latin flare and classical partner dances. Ballroom dancing uses step-patterns & rhythmical movement expressing the characteristics of music. Ballroom dancing consists of two styles: the Smooth or Standard and the Rhythm or Latin. The Smooth, Standard style focuses on the elegance, grace and fluidity of movement. The Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep are danced in this manner. The Rhythm Latin style focuses on a display of vibrant energy and a personal flair included in this style are the East Coast Swing, Jive, Rumba, Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo, Samba and Paso Doble. Popular dances, such as the Argentine Tango, Salsa, Merengue, West Coast Swing, Hustle, Bachata, NightClub 2-Step and Country and Western Dancing, are more recent additions to the world of Ballroom dance.

Musical Theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical (humor, pathos, love, anger) are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated whole through character presentation and dance. Kickline will bring precision lines in the arms, legs, body positioning, placements to stay in formations, and working in a group to stay together. Kicklines will be performed with character shoes which are 2” high heels! Kicklines combine very traditional jazz techniques, some musical theater, and very fun high energy precision lines, poses, turns, and of course some crazy high kicks and flexibility. *These two styles are combined to create a specialty class offered at various times. *Ballet and/or Jazz are required

Conditioning/Technique classes are a combination class focusing on strength, technique, execution, and routine step training. Breaking down how to stretch and know your body using center room, barre, and floor exercises to build flexibility and strength. Moving through various styles of leaps and jumps, turns of all kinds, specialty skills, and works of improvisation dance to form one’s own form of art within dance. We carry a strong focus to strength and conditioning training with a dance outline to work proper muscle groups needed to perform in class and on stage. This class will break down all the steps, return to classic body placement and really focus on proper technical training; helping to build up and perfect the simple and more difficult skills. *Technique classes are offered for all our students and highly recommended
